Artist Statement and Introduction
Artist Statement
Welcome to my blog. I am Christina Barton and I am a Painter, Print-maker and Drawing Artist from the South West of England, currently studying at Plymouth College of Art.
My practice consists primarily of a focus on mark-making.
Within my painted works, I use oil and acrylic paints in a gestural way, experimenting with surface texture, the drawn line and colour. I often incorporate found objects and the outcomes of my work greatly depend on the surface on which I am working, usually wooden boards but also paper, perspex, and aluminium.
Within printmaking, I use processes such as screen-printing, collograph, chine colle, and monoprinting to achieve my desired result.
The themes behind my work are influenced by ideas around relationships, societal issues, memory, mental lucidity and emotional stress, which emerge often within paint and print alike.
I relate to the tactile and mark-making elements of the work of Anselm Kiefer, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Cy Twombly, Julie Mehretu and Gerhardt Richter. The artistic movements of Dada, Neo-Expressionism and Surrealism all have an influence on my work.
'Tell' and 'Pull'. 2017. Oil and Oil pastel on Aluminium. A5.
