Finishing my Bachelor's Degree - what next?

Dear Reader,

It has been a fair few weeks since I last wrote an update on my current practice and I feel it would be good to provide an insight into what my next steps will be.

In May, my fellow students and I had our final hand-in for the Painting, Drawing and Printmaking BA at Plymouth College of Art. After years of hard work, contextualising and fretting, I am very pleased to say that I will be graduating with a 1st class degree overall as well as the same mark on my Dissertation also. All of us on the course did very well, many more students also being awarded a 1st and I am overjoyed for every one of us.

The degree show itself went very well, with plenty of fantastic awards being handed to students in the form of grants, shows and residencies. I was very lucky to be offered a place in the 2020 Signpost 9 exhibition by Richard Sutherland as well as being presented with the FRESH Talent award by the Brownston Gallery. This award was also presented to Mark Davey, Sapphire Parker and Melissa Harris, and the four of us were given an exhibition at the Modbury Gallery in July. I am so grateful for the awards, both for the opportunity as well as a recognition of our hard work. Catherine, the director of the gallery, has advised me on places to enquire about internships and residencies, so I have some good leads for further opportunities.

This summer I have stayed in Plymouth, working hard in a part time position in preparation for further study. I will be enrolling this September on the Masters Drawing degree at Plymouth College of Art and I am so excited to enjoy in-depth discussions with other creatives again, pushing my understanding of my own artistic abilities and gaining connections. I have also been in contact with a fine artist in Plymouth in the hopes of securing a studio space for myself on the Barbican. Things are looking very hopeful for my practice at the moment!

More exploring to do, more drawings, more experiences.

I will be updating my social media channels over the next few months, so be sure to follow the links to those to keep up to date with what is going on!

Christina Barton.
