Venice Fellowship - The British Council

The Venice Fellowships Programme - The British Council

This Spring, I heard about an opportunity being offered to Plymouth College of Art students for the first time by The British Council. Two students from partnered universities would be accepted to work at the 2018 Venice Architecture Biennale at the British Pavillion for a month. I wasted no time in organising an application, and with the help of my peers support and my tutors advice, I was overjoyed to later learn that I had been accepted this opportunity.

At the Induction Weekend in May, the other 65 successful applicants and I were able to meet one another, and discovered that we had been given our groups. I am in Group 6, the last of the people to go this year, and so we will be working there from the 25th of October to the 26th of November.

I am overjoyed to add that we will also be conducting a research project whilst we are there, with the option to either write a (max 2000 word) essay at the end detailing our findings and conclusions, or to create a body of creative work with a short written explanation at the end. A natural maker, I have chosen to respond to the project with a portfolio of Drawings, Paintings and Prints which I will be creating on site on my days off from working at the Pavillion.

I fly tomorrow on the 24th of October, and I can not wait to get to work. I will be chronicling this exprience on this blog whilst I am away, posting pictures of what I have made but also of where I have been, the scenes around the British Pavillion, the Artists I work alongside, curiosities that I discover walking through the winding streets and videos of the murky waters lapping at the underbellies of the boats.  I hope that you will be interested in seeing what I get up to.

If you would like to hear more about the experience, you can visit the official British Council website here or read about it in the Visual Arts South West article here

Ciao!
