Venice Fellowship - Day 4
Today was our first full day off, so I spent the first part of the day weaving my way through the Venice Marathon crowds to the Biennale and walking around the last few Pavillions that I hadn't yet seen. I was very impressed in the official Biennale pavillion, because there was a room full of really beautiful gestural architecture drawings.
I often feel intimidated by very proportionally correct architectural drawings because I never use a ruler, and I am also very heavy-handed when it comes to Drawing.
However, I understand now that I am most enjoying the quick fineliner drawings while I am out, and as you can see from this drawing of the Pavillion from outside of the Giardini (blurry as the photo is), I am embracing the rain splashing onto the paper and causing the ink to run.
I brought along my Grandmother's old watercolour kit and filled up the bottle inside with Venetian lagoon water, so I will be using that to water down the pen, water-soluble pencils and the paints in the watercolour palette I brought along. Though I admit I don't know what the sulphurous particles in the water will do to the paint ... I'll just have to find out.
It has also been great to see the animals embracing the water. Small schools of fish are exploring the steps and doorways submerged beneath the Acqua Alta, and the turtles have also been chasing eachother around in the ponds and fountains.
Tonight the plan is to find some rain boots and go draw the reflections on the water in St Marc's Square, so look out for those drawings being uploaded tomorrow.
